The Real Housewives of Atlanta – Season 6 Ratings

Updated Tuesday, May 20th 2014, after S06E27 – Husbands Revealed – aired at 8pm on Sunday May 18th 2014.

So it looks like The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s husbands’ secrets are more coveted by viewers than those of their wives. Sunday’s twenty-seventh and final episode of the longest season in Real Housewives history garnered almost 20% more viewers than last week’s Lost Footage/Secrets Revealed episode. At 8pm Sunday 2,128,000 people aged two years & over tuned in, and with 1,168,000 of them aged 18-49 years, the husbands exceeded the wives in attracting the younger audience by 180,000 people. Based on the precipitous ratings decline of last week’s episode and given a lot of push back from RHoA viewers on Social Media about how Bravo Media were dragging out this season, I had predicted that between 1.1m & 1.3m people aged two years & over would tune in. Well how wrong I was, as more than that number tuned in for the 10pm repeat airing which attracted 1,307,000 total and 732,000 of them aged between 18 & 49 years – P18-49 demo of 0.60, in addition to the 2.13m who watch the first run airing.

However with the two ‘Secrets’ episodes averaging fewer than 2m viewers, they both dragged down the end of season average. After 27 episodes aired at 8pm, 3,731,037 viewers tuned in on average for each first run 8pm Sunday airing with 2,114,481 of them aged 18-49. That’s still spectacular growth of 20.35% over Season 5 and 30.45% over Season 4, and while most other Real Housewives franchises are posting season-on-season ratings declines RHoA continues to buck that trend.

With Memorial Day weekend falling next Sunday, the second spin-off for Kandi Burruss; The Real Housewives of Atlanta; Kandi’s Wedding, won’t debut until the following Sunday, June 1st, 2014. I imagine her ratings will be around the levels of Secret’s Revealed episodes and if she can average over 2m viewers per episode that should be considered a great return. NeNe Leakes’ own wedding spin-off I Dream of NeNe; The Wedding, which aired for 6 episodes on Tuesday nights before its two hour finale aired on a Sunday, averaged just over 1.5m viewers with her Sunday nuptials episode attracting 2.28m viewers.

Full Season Summary

Bravo Media will be full of high expectations as their fall line-up of six series either returning or debuting come to their screens to lift Bravo TV’s ratings, after what only can be described as a very mediocre October ratings period. The return of The Real Housewives of Atlanta – Season 6, brings their highest rated show back to air but it also sets up a further opportunity to assess whether their largest & most successful franchise – The Real Housewives of …. has plateaued or begun to decline. The recently completed Real Housewives of New Jersey sunk to its lowest rated season of its five, and while it remains the #2 rated franchise, this season’s ratings decline, to the tune of -15% of its prior season audience and a larger -20% loss of viewers aged 18 to 49 years, will not be something Bravo Media will wish to see happen to RHoA.

In the lead up to this sixth season of RHoA, the Nene Leakes solo vehicle, I Dream of Nene: The Wedding has aired Tuesday nights to very respectable but not earth shattering ratings. In fact it’s only fellow RHoA housewife, Kandi Burruss and her The Kandi Factory that is keeping Nene from being the lowest rated Housewives’ spin-off in its freshman season in the 18 to 49 year old demo. Although that should change after Leakes’ two hour wedding finale airs next Sunday, October 27th.

The three previous seasons have debuted to audience sizes of; S5 – 3.2m – 18-49 Demo 1.60; S4 – 2.9m – Demo 1.50; S3 – 2.4m – Demo 1.30 and I predict that Season 6′s premiere will exceed Season Three’s but fall short of both Season’s 4 & Season’s 5
