Which Bravo TV Shows Will or Won’t Be Back in 2014?

Cancelled by Bravo

Make sure you read our April 2014 cancellation update article.

Back in April, 2013 when Bravo Media were planning their annual Upfronts presentation to advertisers, they issued a press release announcing their 2013 programming slate as they Greenlit 17 New and 18 Returning Unscripted Series for the coming year. Taking which shows that had aired in 2012 plus those in the first quarter of 2013, that hadn’t gained a series renewal, it was fairly easy to deduce the ratings cut off level which defined success or failure for shows that aired on Bravo TV.

Updated Thursday, February 6 th after S11E17 – the finale – aired at 10pm Wednesday, February 5th, 2013.

Top Chef New Orleans wrapped its eleventh season last night and while this week’s finale cored them their highest rated episode of the season, it was also the lowest rated finale as far back as our records exist. Last night’s episode attracted 1,693,000 viewers, with 872,000 of those aged 18 to 49 years – Demo 0.70, growing 13.32% and 7.39% respectively compared with the prior week’s episode. Also with both those numbers being higher than the season average, that average has now increased to 1,264,176 viewers per episode and 658,647 of those aged between 18 & 49 years.

This season ending with a ratings deficit with Top Chef – Seattle of -10.49% in the total audience numbers and -15.93% in the more important 18 to 49 year old age group.

Compared with Season 9 the 18-49 demo is down by -41.09% and against Season 8 the deficit in the demo preferred by advertisers is -57.35% in negative territory.

While a twelfth season has been commission; Bravo Media announced that last week, we still think that given the precipitous loss of viewers over the last few seasons that the show’s format (and probably hosts too – bye bye Padma Lakshmi?) needs to be significantly revamped, and unless the potential suitor for producers Magical Elves (about to be acquired by The Tinopolis Group decides to invest in the franchise, the production budget may need to be cut as advertiser revenue for Bravo Media continues to decline.

Bravo Media Greenlights 17 New + 18 Returning Unscripted Series

Bravo Logo 200

With the TV Upfronts season in full swing, Bravo Media have after their Press Breakfast Briefing this morning, announced the new & returning shows for the coming year. Of note is the the first official confirmation that both the poorly rated (in Real Housewives terms anyway) Real Housewives of New York & The Real Housewives of Miami are returning for their sixth & third seasons respectively and as expected there is no third season for Kathy Griffin’s talk show Kathy. One renewal we predicted was the confirmation of a full season order for Fashion Queens, after its original limited three season averaged just under 1m viewers in the 11:30pm Sunday time-slot.

With the worst start for ratings for any of the 10 seasons of Top Chef or for that matter for the four seasons of Top Chef Masters or even when compared with the two seasons of the cancelled Top Chef Desserts, the third episode, which aired on Thanksgiving Eve lent itself too easily to jokes about Turkeys. And what a ratings turkey this season is proving to be.

The fourth episode of last year’s ninth season; Top Chef Texas, aired the night prior to Thanksgiving in 2011, and drew 1,671,000 viewers with 0.70 in the 18-49 demo. At the time that was a season high for total audience numbers but not for those aged 18-49. Last Wednesday, Tom & Emeril managed to cook up just over 1m viewers for the 1st time this season, as 1,045,000 people tuned in, but their 18-49 demo rating held for the third week at 0.40. This, however means their 10th season average stays below 1 million viewers at 966,000 and a rather paltry (poultry?) 0.40 in the 18-49 demo. Read more
