Bravo Media Are
Passionate About Their
New & Returning Shows

With the TV Upfronts season in full swing, Bravo Media have after their Press Breakfast Briefing this morning, announced the new & returning shows for the coming year. Of note is the the first official confirmation that both the poorly rated (in Real Housewives terms anyway) Real Housewives of New York & The Real Housewives of Miami are returning for their sixth & third seasons respectively and as expected there is no third season for Kathy Griffin’s talk show Kathy. One renewal we predicted was the confirmation of a full season order for Fashion Queens, after its original limited three season averaged just under 1m viewers in the 11:30pm Sunday time-slot. Ratings for Wednesday August 8th, 2012 – MDL-LA & Top Chef Masters

Josh Flagg, Madison Hildebrand & Josh Altman

Against the Olympics telecast on sister net NBC, the 9pm airing of MDL – LA has performed reasonably well, in fact this week’s ninth episode with 972,000 viewers and last week’s with 978,000 are the 4th & 3rd highest of the season so far, and both are slightly above this season’s average of 966,111.

Season 4 only had 9 episodes and averaged 1,031,000 and that means that Season 5 is trending down by 6.29%. Bravo is finding itself in a bad position with very few of its freshman shows getting much ratings traction, which will ensure that mature shows like MDL-LA, will continue to get renewed even as they approach or pass their ‘sell-by-date’

Proof of that ‘past sell-by-date’ phenomena is this season’s Top Chef: Masters. Although it’s only in its fourth season, that comes on top of 9 seasons of Top Chef as well as 2 of Top Chef:Just Desserts. In its 2 weeks up against the Olympics, it has continued to shed viewers dropping an additional 110,000 (-12,85%) this week, to a new series low. This being hot on the heels of the disappointing debut of Around the World in 80 Plates, will not do host Curtis Stone’s reputation any good as a long term ratings winner for Bravo.

After impressive ratings last week for both MDL-LA as well as the premiere of Top Chef Masters, both shows dropped significantly in audience numbers this week.

At 9pm, MDL-LA dropped back below 1m viewers after two weeks where it scored above that, as just 978,000 watched the ‘Shark Out of Water’ episode with the 18-49 demo rating dropping down to 0.4 as well. Although that’s the third highest rated episode of this 5th season, that figure is just above the season average of 965,375 after 8 episodes. At the same stage in season four the average was 1,033,000 and some 2.5% higher than this season.

With Around the World in 80 Plates having wrapped up its freshman season last Wednesday, Curtis Stone didn’t stay off Bravo hosting duties for long as he returned this Wednesday as host of the 4th season of Top Chef Masters. Season 3 of TCM, which aired April to June 2011, averaged 1,182,500 viewers at the same 10pm time slot, scoring 0.58 in the 18-49 demo. The premiere for Season 3 opened with 1,010,000 and 0.50 demo, and Season four’s premiere topped that by 10% with 1,112,000 viewers tuning in. Despite the increase in total viewers the demo percentage stayed the same at 0.50. Where Bravo will be thrilled, is that the return of Top Chef Masters, has already rated higher than any episode of 80 Plates, whose highest rated show was the 8th episode, with a total audience of 835,000. Last Wednesday night saw Avery Pursell in Uruguay winning the 1st season of Around the World in 80 Plates but the ratings winners of the night were Josh, Josh & Madison. For the first time in the 5th season of Million Dollar Listing – LA, it’s 9pm airing managed to exceed the 1m viewer mark, coming in with a total audience of 1,011,000 and with 0.50 in the 18-49 demo for their 6th episode. While it’s great that they breached one million, the comparable episode in the fourth season pulled 1,181,000 viewers and therefore this latest season is still trending downwards and is averaging 912,667 versus last season’s 1,025,000 at the same stage.

At 10pm the 1st (and only?) season of Around The World in 80 Plates reached its final destination and Avery managed to beat out fellow finalists, Steve ‘Nookie’ Postal and Liz Garrett for the win. What didn’t turn out to be a ratings winner though was this particular show. The final episode was only the third highest rated (out of 10) with 830,000 viewers and 0.30 in the 18-49 demo. Overall the season averaged 750,600 viewers with a 0.34% of 18 to 49 year old’s tuning in. To put that in comparison Chef Roble & Co in its freshman season averaged 1,155,000 with 0.54%, and that would have been a much cheaper show for Bravo to produce.
