As we wrote last week, Bravo Media held back all of their big guns for the second week of Nielsen’s Fall Sweeps and apart from The Real of Housewives of Atlanta’s season five premiere getting off to a record start, the rest of that week was best swept away. So, how did the third week go?

Unfortunately, not only wasn’t it any better but when compared like-for-like with the programming for the same week in 2011, total audience levels declined by 18%. In the equivalent week in 2011 Bravo TV aired a total of 8 hours of original programming over four nights, versus last week’s 12 hours over five nights. The additions being; five versus two episodes of Watch What Happens Live, this year two episodes of The Real Housewives of Miami aired, whereas in 2011 no original programming was aired on Thursday, November 17th and the last difference is LOLwork added on Wednesday’s, giving that night 3 hours of first run programming. And that was the week that was and no doubt Bravo Media will be glad it’s finally over but there are still 11 days to go in Nielsen’s Fall Sweeps. Bravo decided to have a quiet first week of Nielsen’s sweeps and not premiere any new shows and then bet heavily on this week just ended. With two new shows premiering and the return of three others, Bravo Media were wagering on ratings success compressed into the same week as the Presidential election. Back on September 20th, knowing full well a very close election was in the offing, Bravo Media issued a press release announcing this week’s new programming and then backed it up with another press release on October 23rd, heralding what a big week it would be for Bravo Media. But what started on Mount Everest, with the record ratings for Sunday’s 9pm RHoA premiere, ended on the down low Wednesday, with the worst rated episode in Top Chef’s seven year history. Earlier Tuesday, any chance of Thursday’s ratings success was swept aside as RHoM, was wiped from the Thursday’s schedule and pushed to the following Sunday. Read more

Ahead of their normal release time Bravo Media issued a press release rightly heralding the record achievement of the ladies from Atlanta, as the third season premiere of RHoA garnered a massive audience of “over 3.2m million” for their 9pm first airing. They also correctly pointed out that this was an 11% increase of RHoA’s fourth season premiere in 2011, which at that time was also a record.

We wondered then, in our commentary to their press release, why they had been silent in respect to the growth in the 18-49 demographic audience and as we can see from last night’s ratings this also grew from Season 4′s 1.50 to the 1.60 that Season 5′s premiere drew. And that’s something else worth heralding! Read more

When RHoNJ premiered their fourth season on April 22nd, 2012 and grabbed 2,957,000 viewers they exceeded by 61,000 from Season 4′s RHoA, the previous record for the highest rated Real Housewives premiere audience. Sadly the New Jersey wives didn’t get to keep that record for long, as Nene Leakes & crew stormed back last night with their fifth season premiere, netting a new Housewives record of 3,200,000 viewers, of which over 2m of those were in the key advertiser demographic of viewers aged 18-49 years. On January 8th, 2012 Bravo started airing Andy Cohen’s late night talk vehicle, Watch What Happens Live, 5 nights a week at 11pm which allowed it to follow on from Bravo’s five night slate of original programming. A show that grew out of Cohen’s hosting duties of the various Real Housewives & Top Chef reunions, it tends to struggle ratings wise on nights where it doesn’t either follow a RH show or have as a guest of cast member of one of the 6 Real Housewives iterations.

Detailed below are the ratings for top 20 episodes (out of 91 in Season 6), 19 of which broke through the 1,000,000 viewer mark. All but one of the Top 20 WWHL episodes have been on the same night of a Real Housewives show, the exception being February 29th, 2012 when the 2 finalists of the proceeding hours program: Top Chef – Chicago – The Finale were on.
