Top Chef New Orleans wrapped its eleventh season last night and while this week’s finale cored them their highest rated episode of the season, it was also the lowest rated finale as far back as our records exist. Last night’s episode attracted 1,693,000 viewers, with 872,000 of those aged 18 to 49 years – Demo 0.70, growing 13.32% and 7.39% respectively compared with the prior week’s episode. This season ending with a ratings deficit with Top Chef – Seattle of -10.49% in the total audience numbers and -15.93% in the more important 18 to 49 year old age group.

Compared with Season 9 the 18-49 demo is down by -41.09% and against Season 8 the deficit in the demo preferred by advertisers is -57.35% in negative territory.

While a twelfth season has been commission; Bravo Media announced that last week, we still think that given the precipitous loss of viewers over the last few seasons that the show’s format (and probably hosts too – bye bye Padma Lakshmi?) needs to be significantly revamped, and unless the potential suitor for producers Magical Elves (about to be acquired by The Tinopolis Group decides to invest in the franchise, the production budget may need to be cut as advertiser revenue for Bravo Media continues to decline.

Top Chef Seattle has had three weeks of torrid ratings and so the increase of last night’s fourth episode to 0.50 in the 18-49 demo will give Bravo Media and Magical Elves a little to cheer about. Just don’t expect any press releases yet! Overall, this week saw the total audience climb to 1,115,000 viewers and that has pushed the season-to-date average just above the 1m mark; to 1,003,250 viewers per episode. That’s also reduced the prior season deficits to -36.76 for total audience and -43.33% in the 18-49 demo versus Season 9 and -48.44% total and -56.41% in the 18-49 demo versus All Stars Season 8. Additionally as the season has progressed each week has seen a growth in viewership so perhaps all is not yet lost for Top Chef. Read more
