Updated through episode S10E114 which aired on Sunday December 22nd, 2013 and which was the tenth season finale and featured Mariah Carey.

Full Season Summary – written October 5th, 2013

Since returning from its Labor Day Weekend hiatus, Season 10 of Watch What Happens Live has witnessed quite the ratings fall off. Partly this has to do with it rarely getting original programming as its lead-in, but it also demonstrates a wider viewer malaise and perhaps Andy Cohen’s own malaise as well.

The ratings for WWHL are always highest when it acts as a ‘post-game’ talk show for Bravo Media’s Real Housewives’ franchise but with last Monday’s edition S10E57 following the 10pm airing of The Real Housewives of Miami which only garnered 653,000 viewers, and with WWHL dropping to just 491,000 viewers (and only 275,000 aged 18 to 49 years), even that’s not guaranteed.

Not one of the most recent twenty-five episodes has risen above 1m viewers, and that was once always guaranteed to occur once a week; its Sunday night episode.

The highest rated of these 20 was on Tuesday September 17th when Nene Leakes was the guest and the lowest on Thursday (when Bravo TV air no original programming) when Lizzy Caplan and Tony Danza were watched by just 292,000 viewers. The worst performance in the 18-49 demo came when Gloria Estefan and Sean Kingston generated just 191,000 18 to 49 year old viewers on September 12th

Even Bethenny Frankel, the former Bravo TV megastar, who is having her own ratings woes, only managed to generate Andy 730,000 viewers and that’s less than Danielle Staub, Tamra Barney, Kathy Wakile and Jacqueline Laurita all separately garnered.

Thursday’s not surprisingly continue to be its weakest night based on its ratings and certainly if I was a PR rep for some of the talent booked I would ensure that I never booked them on WWHL on that night each week as Gloria Estefan Sean Kingston, Jewel, Taye Diggs, Lizzy Caplan, Tony Danza, Daniel Radcliffe and Betsy Brandt were on average only seen by 337,500 viewers and just 197,750 aged between 18 and 49 years.

Watch What Happens Live” is produced by Embassy Row for Bravo Media. Michael Davies, Deirdre Connolly and Andy Cohen serve as executive producers.

Prior Updates

Updated through episode S10E103 which aired on Tuesday December 10th which featured various cast members of Downton Abbey; Laura Carmichael, Rob James Collier, Allen Leech and Lesley Nicol.

Updated through Thursday’s episode S10E100 which featured Whoopi Goldberg & Zoe Saldana.

The five episodes of Watch What Happens Live that aired last week averaged an impressive 876,400 viewers per episode, and that’s the highest week so far in this megalong tenth season, which now stretches to 100 episodes. Sunday’s episode with Cynthia Bailey & Sandra Bernhard was a season high and Tuesday’s episode which featured Patti Stanger with 950,000 viewers was also the second best Tuesday since June 2013. As is usual, Thursday’s episode with just 450,000 viewers was the lowest rated this week, but given that its lead-in; a preview of 100 Days of Summer, only garnered 295,000 viewers at 10:30pm Andy Cohen can draw some satisfaction that gaining 155,000 viewers on his lead-in, shows that people do turn to Bravo TV at 11pm just to watch WWHL.

Updated Wednesday, December 4th, 2013 after S10E96 aired Sunday December 1st and featured Cynthia Bailey and Sandra Bernhardt and S10E97 aired Monday December 2nd featuring Kym Richards and Lisa Whelchel Still Pending Update after S10E98 aired Tuesday December 3rd featuring Cheyenne Jackson and Lilly Ghalichi. Ratings delayed due to the Thanksgiving break.

Just five weeks after Cynthia Bailey’s last appearance on the October 27th edition of Watch What Happens Live , she returned to Andy’s Clubhouse but this time without the controversial Al Sharpton as her co-guest. Accompanied on this occasion with the marginally less controversial Sandra Bernhard, Cynthia managed to more than double WWHL’s ratings from S10E76’s 773,000 viewers (demo 0.30) to this week’s season high of 1,547,000 (demo 0.60).

Earlier on that evening the finale of I Dream of Nene: The Wedding had aired attracting 2,280,000 viewers followed by a special Sunday airing of The New Atlanta at 10pm with 1,137,000. That compared with Sunday’s episode of RHoA at 8pm with 3.1m and then a repeat of the same episode at 10pm with 1,529,000 viewers, which was only slightly less than WWHL’s audience at 11pm.

Whatever the reason for the doubling of the audience between October 27th and Sunday December 1st, this Sunday’s ratings were a new season high for this tenth season of WWHL, beating the 1,374,000 who tuned in two week’s ago for the previous Sunday edition of WWHL.

Updated Friday, November 22nd, 2013 to include ratings for S10E95 which aired on Thursday November 21st and featured Jennifer Hudson and Angela Bassett.

After last night’s 95th episode of WWHL of this tenth season, Andy Cohen gets to take a break for the next week. In preparation for the return of Millionaire Matchmaker to Bravo TV on Thursday December, 5th, repeat episodes from previous Matchmaker seasons aired during the three prime time hours. With the 10pm Matchmaker repeat garnering 547,000 viewers (333,000 aged 18-49 – Demo 0.30) and almost all of them staying on Bravo TV at 11pm, WWHL had an audience totaling 522,000 (296,000 aged 18-49 – Demo 0.30) for its 30 minute run. That is 33% higher than this season’s Thursday average, and should bring a smile to Andy’s face as he heads off for Thanksgivukkah!

Updated Tuesday, November 19th, 2013 to include ratings for S10E91 which aired on Sunday November 18th and featured Phaedra Parks from The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Ben Tankard & his wife, Jewel Tankard from Thicker Than Water.

As much as Andy Cohen and Bravo PR like to name drop the non-Bravolebrities that Cohen get to sit in his clubhouse, the reality is that almost without exception Watch What Happens Live always gets its largest audiences on nights when one, strong programming precedes it in the schedule and two, when he hosts in his clubhouse Bravo TV’s own stars who appeared earlier in that night’s line up.

Today Bravo Media issued this press release stating that Sunday’s 91st episode was its most-watched episode of the season. Yes, that’s right a show with Pheadra, Ben & Jewel (the later two unknown to most Bravo TV viewers just 8 days ago) has topped WWHL’s tenth season, that in the 90 episodes before it has seen Oprah Winfrey, Lady Gaga, Lisa Kudrow, John Legend, Daniel Radcliffe, Orlando Bloom and Sir Ian McKellen and many other big names as guests.

With Cohen’s recently announced departure from 30 Rock’s executive suite, his fate and the success of WWHL is inextricably linked to Bravo TV’s own programming, something that he will now no longer shape as once he did.

Updated Thursday, November 14th, 2013 to include ratings for S10E89 which aired on Wednesday November 13th and featured Top Chef Masters’ Curtis Stone and Gaill Simmons as guests.

The first WWHL that Andy Cohen hosted after yesterday’s announced move from 30 Rock’s Executive Suite and just a week after Giada de Laurentiis and Katey Sagal helped Andy Cohen to his highest rated Wednesday in months with 739,000 viewers (482,000 18-49 demo 0.40); the two Bravolebrities Curtis & Gail couldn’t match last Wednesday’s rating. With them only attracting 534,000 viewers (abd a lowly 214,000 aged 18-49 – Demo 0.2), despite a more-or-less similar lead-in from Top Chef New Orleans their appearance precipitated a ratings decline of -27.74% overall and a massive -55.60% in the 18-49 demo, compared with the prior Wednesday (S10E84).

Given that WWHL has seen its leanest ratings in its history since Labor Day and had finally witnessed a turn around earlier in the week, it is somewhat disappointing to see last night’s episode not even reach the post Labor Day Wednesday average of 590,000 total – 298,300 aged 18-49 – demo 0.24, although given the fall off in viewer interest that Top Chef Masters has seen in its last two seasons, perhaps it’s not that surprising that Curtis & Gail couldn’t didn’t bring viewers to WWHL either.

Updated Wednesday, November 13th, 2013 to include ratings for S10E88 which aired on Tuesday November 12th and featured Shahs of Sunset’s Mercedes ‘Mj’ Javid and Mike Shouhed as guests.

Whilst was sitting in the Clubhouse Tuesday night and The New York Times was headed off to print announcing his new role within the Bravo Media family, he and his two Shah’s produced his highest rated Tuesday night ratings for Watch What Happens Live since S06E81 aired way, way back on May 8th2012. Tuesday saw 948,000 total viewers (525,000 18-49 – demo 0.40) which was even higher than the previous night’s episode which featured Brandi Glanville & Mark Consuelos.

Second Update – Tuesday, November 12th, 2013 to include ratings for S10E87 which aired on Monday November 11th and featured The Real Housewives of Beverly Hill’s Brandi Glanville and Mark Consuelos as guests.

On the back of Brandi Glanville, (perhaps I should be careful writing that) and her accusatory mouth (we’re looking at you; Joanna Krupa), Monday’s WWHL saw its highest rated Monday in over three months, as 922,000 viewers tuned in (510,000 aged 18-49 – Demo 0.40) as Brandi, her dirty mouth and Mr Kelly Ripa entertained the masses and hopefully provided a boost to Thursday’s second Reunion episode of The Real Housewives of Miami.

Updated Tuesday, November 12th, 2013 to include ratings for S10E86 which aired on Sunday November 10th and featured The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Porsha Stewart and Nelly as guests.

For the second Sunday running (and on the strength of two stellar RHoA episodes) Andy Cohen saw his ratings push above 1.2m viewers. At 11pm Sunday 1,283,000 people aged two years and over tuned in for Porsha & Nelly and scored Cohen his first 0.60 in the 18-49 demographic since Jacqueline Laurita & Rebecca Romjin, almost four months ago on July 21, 2013. This is only the second time in the entire eighty six episodes of this tenth season of WWHL that the 18-49 demo has been as high as 0.60.

This great rating result has pushed Cohen’s Sunday average since Labor Day back above 800,000 but still a long way short than the 1m+ that his Sunday episodes have historically averaged. With WWHL taking a break over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday week, I’d guess that when he returns on Sunday December 1st that will kick off the Eleventh Season and these weaker Season 10 ratings can be forgotten.

Updated Friday, November 8th, 2013 to include ratings for S10E85 which aired on Thursday November 7th and featured English/Irish boy band ‘The Wanted’; Siva Kaneswaran, Jay Mcguiness, Nathan Sykes, Max George and Tom Parker,
as guests.

With just a repeat of the previous Sunday’s Fashion Queens as lead-in, it was no surprise that The Wanted weren’t particularly wanted by Bravo TV viewers. At 11pm a lowly 348,000 viewers tuned in for WWHL and of those, only 200,000 were aged 18 to 49 years; which is Cohen’s third lowest rated show in that demo since Labor Day. Still those 200,000 people aged 18-49 who watched WWHL was larger than the 176,000 younger viewers who tuned in at 8pm for the cast of Arrested Development on James Lipton’s Inside the Actors Studio.

Updated Thursday, November 7th, 2013 to include ratings for S10E84 which aired on Wednesday November 6th and featured Giada de Laurentiis and Katey Sagal as guests.

Proving, what many of us have long known, that having guests that directly relate to the audience of the preceding 10pm show’s audience, always brings the highest ratings and Andy Cohen had his best Wednesday night audience in months last night.

Giada de Laurentiis was a natural and interesting guest to headline a post Top Chef edition of WHHL and the ratings; 739,000 people total with 482,000 aged 18-49 (demo 0.40), proved just that.

Updated Wednesday, November 6th, 2013 to include ratings for S10E83 which aired on Tuesday November 5th and featured Shahs of Sunset’s Reza Farahan with Zachary Levi as guests.

With the 10pm premiere of Shahs of Sunset which last season attracted 2.3m viewers, Andy Cohen would no doubt have expected a big audience for his Tuesday night edition, but with Shahs debuting to only half last of its season’s total premiere audience, just 625,000 viewers watched WWHL at 11pm; only marginally above the WWHL Tuesday average of 607,222 viewers.

Updated Tuesday, November 5th, 2013 to include ratings for S10E81 which aired on Sunday November 3rd and featured The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Kandi Burruss and Kenya Moore as well as S10E82 which aired on Monday November 4th featuring The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Lisa Vanderpump and Whitney Cummings.

2pm Update

It’s taken 44 episodes but for the first time since August 12th, 2013; episode S10E37, featuring Joanna Krupa and Lea Black has WWHL finally exceeded the 1m viewer mark. Thus ends the longest lean stretch of ratings ever experienced by Andy Cohen. The 10pm repeat airing of the RHoA premiere provided WWHL’s largest Sunday lead-in since April 21st (when RHoA’s previous season was airing) and that set the stage for Cohen’s best ratings since Jacqueline Laurita and Rebecca Romijn attracted 1.33m on July 21st.

In total 1,277,000 viewers stayed on at 11pm for Kandi Burruss and Kenya Moore at 11pm Sunday and Andy should give them this week’s mazel for bringing his ratings lean spell to an end!

6pm Update

Monday night saw WWHL return to its more recent ratings level as with the insipid finale of The Real Housewives of Miami failing to break even 1m viewers as WWHL’s lead-in, just 696,000 of them stayed around to watch and listen to Lisa & Whitney. With Shahs of Sunset back tonight, Tuesday at 10pm, Andy Cohen will be hoping that the Persians will give him a bigger boost than the Floridians ever managed.

Updated Tuesday, October 29th, 2013

This afternoon Bravo PR issued this press release heralding “its best week and best night of the quarter” but neglected to mention the ratings for that night’s WWHL. Since returning after the Labor Day hiatus, Andy Cohen’s WWHL has returned the longest period and weakest ratings of its ten seasons and with Sunday’s 76th episode of this tenth season featuring a Bravolebrity and having the benefit for the first time in months of having original programming airing at 10pm, I was confident that S10E76 would garner viewership over 1m, something it used to achieve almost each and every Sunday edition. But alas, that wasn’t to be and with just 773,000 viewers tuning in it was the sixth lowest of eight, since Sunday September 8th, 2013.

Hopefully with The Real Housewives of Atlanta returning this Sunday and running through April 2014, Cohen’s lean Sunday run will be over, but in the past two months, his nightly talk vehicle has begun to show signs of old age. Perhaps it’s time for a reboot? Who know’s but Bethenny Frankel might find that she soon has some time on her hands and stepping into Andy’s hosting shoes, might be the best thing for her.

That would also allow Andy Cohen to get back full time to his programming role, and given many of the recent ratings declines seen by Bravo TV, his programming eye might surely be needed.

Updated Friday, October 25nd, 2013 after Watch What Happens Live – Ratings were released for S10E75 which aired on Thursday October 24th, 2013 and featured Rosie Perez and Johnny Knoxville as guests and Michael Ausiello as the bartender. Also please check out the WWHL Thursday ratings article. Not one of the 35 episodes which have aired since Labor Day 2013, a period of seven weeks, has been able to attract an audinece of over 1,000,000 viewers. Something that used to happen at least once per week, in prior seasons. Hopefully with The New Atlanta airing at 10pm on Sunday, October 29th and featuring Cynthia Bailey & Al Sharpton as guests, this record long lean spell will be end.
