Updated 30 March 2013 to include the finale episode S02E12 starring Kristen Chenoweth, Eva Longoria and Josh Groban. This season closed out averaging just 417,167 viewers of which 231,583 were aged 18 to 49 years (18-49 demo 0.20). This compares most unfavorably with her first season, which averaged 721,417 total viewers, 451,667 aged 18 to 49 (Demo 0.40). The one bright spot Griffin can take I suppose, is that the final episode of this season drew 500,000 viewers whereas the final episode last season could only muster 499,000!

Season Summary

We were as shocked as anyone when back in July 2012, Bravo Media commissioned a second season of Kathy, as let’s face it the first didn’t rate very well at all. In our article accompanying the press release, we wrote:

In the 1st season of Kathy; the ratings for the first 8 episodes with Kim Zolciak’s Don’t Be Tardy for the Wedding as its lead-in, averaged 770k with 0.80 in the 18-49 demo, but that dropped to 570k and 0.23 demo once that strong lead-in was lost. So, providing that Season 2 episodes air after a comparable show to DBTFTW, then presumably Bravo will be satisfied with that 3/4 of a million viewers. TV success is not only about ratings and we dare say that the commissioning of this 2nd season is a reward for Kathy’s most recent Emmy nomination.

Original programming for this week started with a bang Sunday night as the 9th episode of RHoNJ scored its second best of this 4th season which set the stage for a great week for Bravo’s ratings. 2,872,000 viewers tuned in and this episode scored 1.40 in the 18-49 demo. Sunday night was a fantastic night for Bravo Ratings across the board, as RHoNJ was followed by Jacqueline Laurita on WWHL at 11pm and she held on to 55% of the lead-in audience to score stellar ratings for Andy Cohen. 1,583,000 viewers (0.70 18-49 demo) tuned in for Jac, who was joined in the clubhouse by new RHoNY Carole Radziwill. With summer winding up and networks winding down, Thursday night on Bravo saw two talk shows airing, both of which had been prerecorded on Monday June 25th. On that day Kathy tweeted out this photo with her guests Sharon Osbourne & Jane Fonda and Lisa Ling joined as well. As Kylie Minogue was only in NYC on Monday, Andy had to also pre-tape his show. This gave both shows’ editors four days to tighten up each episode and iron out any ‘live’ kinks.

After retooling Kathy’s show in the hope of boosting the audience with celebrity guests (see this Bravo PR Release), the first attempt last week featuring Anderson Cooper, not only failed to increase ratings but actually took the season to a series low.

Bravo Ratings – Kathy – Season 1 Ratings

Billed by Kathy Griffin, herself, as a show that would not feature celebrity guests, she, Bravo & her production company, Embassy Row (who also produce Andy Cohen’s ‘Watch What Happens Live’), set themselves up either to break that promise or wish it was one they never made. After debuting at just under 1 million viewers in its first episode on April 19th ratings declined by over 25% in its second week despite now having a strong lead in with the debut of Kim Zolciak’s wedding spinoff ‘Don’t Be Tardy for the Wedding’. By week three, the well known band Wilson Phillips joined Kathy as her guests and if they don’t qualify as ‘celebrities’ then their parents certainly do. Its strongest lead in to date occurred May 31st, 2012 when Tardy drew more than 2m viewers at 9.30pm, but despite that and a scene in Kathy regarding Kim Zolciak’s wig removal, ratings stubbornly stayed below 800,000 as is its average after 7 episodes of its freshman season and by the time it wrapped they had dropped to just 721,000 as its finale with Jimmy Kimmel couldn’t even attract 500,000 viewers.
